The Tactical Challenge
Traditional head-worn tactical augmented reality systems and commercial mixed-reality goggles force an unacceptable operational compromise. Packaging high-power processors, RF transceivers, and primary lithium batteries directly on the warfighter’s cranium concentrates 6W–8W of localized heat, driving skin contact points beyond the 38.0°C biological discomfort threshold within 45 minutes. This induces severe thermal throttling, dimming displays, and sensor drift, while 500g+ of cranial mass accelerates physical neck strain under combat helmets. Existing wired alternatives rely on loose external USB umbilical cables that create dangerous snag hazards across body armor, vehicle hatches, and gear.
Decoupled Compute, Integrated Form Factor
E.C.H.O.-A.R. (Edge Compute Hub with Offloading for Augmented Reality) bypasses the thermodynamic and ergonomic limits of head-worn gear by physically and thermally separating the display from heavy processing silicon and battery storage:
Client Optical Node (On-Face): An ultra-lightweight optical frame weighing, housing only daylight-readable waveguide displays, a minimal buffer cell, and low-power 6-DoF tracking sensors (IMUs and spatial cameras).
Host Compute Node (In Rig / Pocket): A ruggedized tactical handheld or Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) End User Device (EUD) that serves as the central compute engine, wireless communications hub, and primary vapor-chamber heatsink.
Integrated In-Chassis Docking Bay: When stowed, the eyewear locks flush inside a precision-milled cavity in the host chassis. A high-durability, self-aligning 14-pin pogo-pin array automatically fast-charges the glasses while the recessed housing shields delicate optical glass from ballistic, dust, and field impact.
Key Operational Capabilities
85% Cranial Thermal Displacement: Offloads ~6.1W of compute and charging dissipation across the host chassis' exterior vapor chamber, keeping eyewear facial contact points strictly below 34.5°C with zero active micro-fans.
Heads-Up ATAK Situational Awareness: Renders real-time navigation waypoints, friendly positions, and Cursor-on-Target (CoT) feeds directly in the operator’s natural field of view, maintaining weapon-ready posture without looking down at a screen.
Low-Latency FPV Drone Piloting: A high-speed DisplayPort Alt Mode physical bus delivers real-time digital and analog video downlinks with an added motion-to-photon latency penalty under 5 ms.
Tri-Tier Dynamic Bandwidth (LPI/LPD Signature Control): Autonomously shifts system communications from a shielded physical bus (zero latency) to a local tactical Wi-Fi mesh, down to ultra-low-power BLE whisper telemetry bursts, collapsing the warfighter’s electromagnetic RF footprint against adversary Electronic Warfare (EW) direction-finding.
Dismounted Drone Warning (C-UAS Cueing): Interfaces directly with passive RF and acoustic drone-detection sensors to project directional azimuth threat vectors ("Hostile FPV / Bearing 045°") directly into the operator's line of sight without taking hands off their weapon.
